Frequently asked questions

A dental emergency usually involves severe pain, bleeding, or trauma to the mouth. Common dental emergencies include severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, a cracked or broken tooth with nerve exposure, abscesses, swelling, and injury to the mouth, jaw, or face.
Generally, Accident and Emergency (A&E) is not equipped to provide dental treatment. They primarily handle medical emergencies. However, if your situation involves severe bleeding, trauma to the face or jaw, or is life-threatening, you should visit A&E. For dental issues, it's best to contact an emergency dentist or your regular dentist.
In an emergency, a dentist can provide immediate relief for severe pain, address issues such as tooth abscesses, fractured teeth, or injuries to the mouth. They may perform treatments such as extractions, temporary fillings, or prescribe antibiotics to manage infections until a more permanent solution can be implemented.
For unbearable tooth pain before seeing a dentist, you can:
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water.
  • Use over-the-counter pain relievers (following the recommended dosage).
  • Apply a cold compress on the outside of the cheek if there's swelling.
  • Use clove oil on a cotton bud and apply it to the affected area for temporary pain relief.
To alleviate throbbing nerve pain, you can:
  • Avoid hot or cold foods that may trigger sensitivity.
  • Use over-the-counter numbing gels or pain relievers (as directed).
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of the cheek to reduce swelling and numb the area.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water to ease discomfort.
Call our friendly team today and book an emergency dentist appointment. We have dedicated slots for dental emergencies.
How long your toothache will last does depend on the underlying cause. If you have a temporary gum irritation, then the pain should go away within a day or two. If the problem is an abscess or cavity the pain may come and go in waves, but it won’t go away entirely until you have got the dental issue resolved.
By their very nature, most dental emergencies cannot be avoided. However, if you maintain a good regular oral hygiene routine, your teeth and gums will be in the best condition and better able to avoid severe pain due to decay or an abscess.
