So why do people have their teeth whitening by a beauty therapist?
What many people don’t realise, including some of the therapists, is that tooth whitening is the practice of dentistry and so can only be carried out my registered dental professionals. For other groups to do so is illegal. Beauty therapists have been prosecuted by the General Dental Council and Trading Standards.
Before tooth whitening your teeth and gums do need to be assessed to ensure they are healthy. Also a dentist needs to establish that it is the most appropriate treatment for you.
Also the right materials need to be used i.e. CE marked safe materials only available to UK Dental Professionals. There have been cases of patient’s gums and teeth being damaged by inappropriate acidic gels.
To have your tooth whitening done at a beauty salon maybe cheaper. But think about the risks involved in an untrained person placing unknown possibly harmful chemicals in your mouth without any possibility of legal recourse if anything goes wrong. So is cheaper better?
