Mouth Cancer Action Month occurs every November organised by the Orla Health Foundation.
They hope to raise awareness of the disease and encourage us all to be mouth aware. Here’s what they have to say:
“By spotting mouth cancer early, we have a much better chance of beating it.
With early diagnosis, the chances of surviving mouth cancer are nine out of ten – those odds are pretty good, and that’s why knowing what to look out for is so important.
Sadly, far too many mouth cancers are not spotted early enough.”
During Mouth Cancer Action Month, we are promoting the message ‘if in doubt, get checked out’
We offer throughout November free mouth cancer check to anyone who is concerned.
Our regular patients can ask us to check anything they may have noticed at any time. If you have a dental health check with us we always check for nay sign of oral cancer.
So what should you be looking out for?
- Mouth ulcers that don’t heal within 3 weeks
- Red or white patches in the mouth
- Unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth, head and neck.
So what can we do to reduce our risk? Well quite a lot really. Opposite is the foundation’s poster explaining the risks.
It’s worth remembering that early detection can result in successful treatment of the disease.
So be mouth aware and if in doubt get it checked out.
